The Word

Imitate.

As I walked the line I was looking for things that had the shape of something familiar, like a tree shaped like a human or something like that. After hours of disappointment, I took a break and sat on a tree that had fallen to the ground. There I just watched the sun go down for a few minutes, and as I got up to leave I noticed from the corner of my eye someone’s shadow. I got a little scared because i thought someone was following me, so I take a better look at the shadow and I came to realize that the shadow belonged to an old leafless tree. But the shadow resembled a short man’s shadow. At that point I realized that I had wasted my time looking for a tree that would imitate a human’s shape instead of looking for shadows that imitate other things.

I did a little research on shadows and found some pretty fun stuff.

Mythological connotations

An unattended shadow or shade was thought by some cultures to be similar to that of a ghost.

It is also believed as an alternative construct that shadows are in fact a representation of God’s presence around an object; like a halo.

EXPLORING THE LINE

As i walked the line, i decided to record things that interest me, things that are different, things that catch my eye. I was also paying attention to sounds, such as the crunching of soft leaves or dried up leaves. Also the the disgusting sound of mud as we walked on it. I found texture in leaves, tree trunks, rocks etc… I wanted to use all five senses, but the thought of tasting things that should not be tasted upsets my stomach.

I also found it easy to go off the line when finding things that are out of place; such as a jacket that looked like it had been eaten by the soil. When I discovered it, it also looked like it was home to hundreds of little tiny bugs. I tried searching in the pockets to see if it had any information about the owner, but all i found was more soil, it looked like it had been there for a few years. I also noticed a few mice living inside tree trunks, i decided to stay away from those.

I found myself enjoining the line, specially watching it change through time. The change in color, the amount of leaves on the trees, the amount of leaves on the ground. I also notice the change on the pathway, since day one to now, you could tell it has been walked on a lot.

Here are just some images that captured my eyes…
